Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has disclosed that about 1,300 applicants who underwent medical screening as part of the ongoing security services recruitment exercise tested positive for HIV.
Speaking on the outcome of the recruitment process, the minister said more than 100,000 applicants participated in the medical screening, with the HIV-positive cases accounting for a small proportion of those assessed.
He noted that the findings underscore the importance of mandatory medical examinations during recruitment into the security services, while also highlighting the need for increased public education, early testing, and access to healthcare.
The minister did not provide further details on how the results would affect the affected applicants but stressed that the recruitment process is being conducted in line with established procedures and medical standards.
The security services recruitment exercise forms part of the government’s efforts to strengthen the country’s security agencies through the enlistment of qualified personnel.
