Hon. David Apasera Calls for Urgent Drainage and Urban Planning Reforms After June 29 Floods

2020 Flagbearer of the People’s National Convention, Hon. David Apasera, has called for immediate investment in drainage systems, better urban planning, and community preparedness programs to prevent future flood disasters in Ghana.
In a press statement issued Sunday, Apasera expressed condolences to families affected by the devastating floods that struck parts of the country on *June 29*, which led to loss of lives and widespread property damage, particularly in Accra.
“It is with a heavy heart that I address you today, following the devastating floods that struck our beloved nation on June 29,” he said.
“To the families who have lost loved ones, please know that you are not alone in your grief. The thoughts and prayers of the entire nation are with you.”
Three-Point Solution for Floods in Accra
Apasera said while the nation mourns, attention must also turn to long-term solutions to address flooding in the capital. He proposed:
1. Improved Drainage Systems
“It is imperative that we invest significantly in the enhancement and maintenance of our drainage systems. By ensuring that these systems are capable of handling heavy rains, we can mitigate the impact of flooding on our communities.”
2. Urban Planning and Green Spaces
He urged government and city authorities to “reevaluate our urban planning strategies to incorporate more green spaces and permeable surfaces.”
According to him, this will help absorb excess rainfall, reduce runoff, and “create resilient neighborhoods” designed with nature in mind.
3. Community Awareness and Preparedness Programs
Apasera called for public education on flood risks, emergency response, and evacuation plans.
“Educating our communities about flood risks and preparedness is crucial… Prepared communities can save lives and reduce losses.”
Call for Solidarity
The PNC 2020 flagbearer assured Ghanaians who lost property that their struggles are recognized and pledged to advocate for measures that support recovery and prevent future tragedies.
“Let us come together to support one another, rebuild our communities, and strengthen our resolve to implement proactive measures that will safeguard us against future disasters,” he stated.
“I am confident that with collective effort, we can create a more resilient Accra for generations to come.”
The June 29 rains submerged homes, roads, and businesses across parts of Accra, renewing public debate about poor drainage, building on waterways, and the city’s flood mitigation plans.
