Chief of Staff calls for united action against drug abuse and trafficking

Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to intensifying the fight against illicit drug trafficking while expanding treatment, recovery and reintegration support for people battling addiction.

Speaking on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama at Ghana’s commemoration of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (World Drug Day 2026), Mr. Debrah said tackling drug abuse requires a comprehensive approach that combines prevention, enforcement, rehabilitation and sustained collaboration.

The event, held under the theme, “The World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses,” brought together government officials, security agencies, civil society organisations, development partners, traditional and religious leaders, and young people to reaffirm their commitment to protecting Ghana’s future.

Mr. Debrah described drug abuse as more than a security challenge, stressing that it is also a public health, social and developmental issue that threatens families, communities and the future of the country’s youth.

He said the Mahama administration remains committed to creating opportunities for young people through education, skills development and employment, noting that prevention begins with hope, purpose and opportunity.

He urged young Ghanaians to protect their future by staying away from drugs and called on all stakeholders to work together through vigilance, compassion and shared responsibility to build a safer, healthier and stronger Ghana for future generations.
