Bawumia Restructures Office, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu takes centre stage

Story: Derrick Owusu

As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) begins its long march back from opposition to relevance, flagbearer Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia has made a bold and calculated first move by restructuring his personal office and installing one of Ghana’s most seasoned political operators as his Chief of Staff.

Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the former Majority Leader and one of the most respected figures, has been appointed to coordinate all operational activities of the Bawumia office.

This role effectively positions him as the number two figure in the entire Bawumia 2028 campaign architecture.

The restructuring is widely interpreted as the opening salvo of what promises to be a meticulously organised 2028 campaign machine, one that learns from the painful lessons of the NPP’s 2024 electoral defeat.

The choice of Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu is itself deeply strategic.

The former Suame MP brings to the role decades of legislative experience, a formidable network across the party’s grassroots, and a reputation for discipline and institutional memory that the Bawumia campaign will desperately need as it attempts to rebuild the NPP’s shattered coalition.

His political in-depth, coupled with both local and international experience also makes him q perfect man for the job at this point in time.

Hon Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu served with distinction as a Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Former Majority Leader and a Former Minority Leader in an illustrious 28 year political career.

On the international scene, Hon. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu served as a Vice Chairman of the Global Organisation of Parlimentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC) and also deputised as Chairman of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA INTERNATIONAL)

The appointment signals that Bawumia is not waiting for 2027 to get serious.

Within the party, the appointment is likely to be be received as a strong signal that Bawumia intends to run a single well-defined command structure, anchored by Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.

The restructuring also puts to rest speculation that Bawumia’s post-election office would remain a loose, informal fluid arrangement.

Other appointments made by the former Vice President and NPP Presidential Candidate are

Opare Ansah – Director in charge of Identifiable Activities

Mr. Peter Mac Manu – Director in charge of Political Strategy

Fred Oware- Political Advisor

Nana Akomeah- Director in Charge of Communication and Branding

Kojo Oppong Nkrumah- Policy Coordination, assisted by Evon Hughes

Anthony Abayifa Karbo – Organization and Youth Inclusion
