Formalizing Small-Scale Mining: rCOMSDEP Rolls Out Training Programme In Eastern Region

Ghana’s Community Mining Scheme Development and Promotions Programme, rCOMSDEP, has extended its training programme for small-scale miners to Bunso in the Eastern Region, as part of ongoing efforts to formalize and strengthen the sector.
The initiative is designed to equip miners with practical knowledge and skills for responsible, safe, and environmentally sustainable mining operations.
According to rCOMSDEP, participants at the Bunso training will receive guidance in four key areas: regulatory compliance, occupational health and safety, environmental stewardship, and modern mining techniques. The goal is to help miners improve productivity while protecting communities and natural resources.
“Through this initiative, rCOMSDEP continues to advance its mandate of promoting responsible mining practices, enhancing livelihoods, and creating a more structured and accountable small-scale mining industry across Ghana,” the programme stated.
The Bunso training adds to rCOMSDEP’s nationwide rollout of capacity-building programmes aimed at moving more small-scale miners into the formal sector. Officials say formalization will reduce illegal mining, improve safety standards, and ensure mining contributes more to local development.
The Eastern Region has a significant concentration of small-scale mining activities, and Bunso was selected to help address knowledge gaps and promote best practices among operators in the area.
rCOMSDEP says similar trainings will continue in other mining communities as it works to align Ghana’s small-scale mining sector with national environmental and safety regulations.
