Western corridor set for transformation with rail project- Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to transform Ghana’s Western Corridor through the development of the Western Rail Line, describing as a key driver of industrial growth, trade expansion, and job creation under his administration’s Resetting Ghana agenda.

Speaking at the 2026 May Day celebration in Koforidua, the President revealed that government is considering integrating the long-anticipated rail project into its flagship infrastructure initiative.

“We are considering absorbing the Western Rail Line under the Big Push programme,” President Mahama stated, signalling renewed commitment to modernising the country’s transport infrastructure.

He stressed that the rail line, once completed, would unlock vast economic opportunities in the Western Corridor, particularly in the extractive and agricultural sectors.

“The completion of the Western Rail Line will open up the bauxite and manganese concessions in the Western Corridor,” he said.

According to the President, the project will also address longstanding logistical challenges by improving the movement of goods from production centres to export hubs, thereby enhancing efficiency and reducing costs.

“It will also make it easy to transport our cocoa beans from the plantations to the ports,” he noted.

President Mahama explained that the Western Rail Line forms part of a broader strategy to reposition Ghana’s economy for sustainable growth by investing in critical infrastructure that supports value addition and industrialisation.

He reiterated that with macroeconomic stability largely restored, government is now shifting its focus to expanding the economy and creating jobs.

“We will not just manage the economy; we will expand it to create jobs and prosperity for the Ghanaian people,” he affirmed.
