Akosombo Dam fully operational after fire as all six turbines restored-President

The Akosombo Hydroelectric Dam is now fully operational following the recent fire outbreak at the switchyard control room, President John Dramani Mahama has announced.

Speaking during the May Day celebrations in the Eastern Region, the President assured Ghanaians that engineers from the Volta River Authority (VRA) and GRIDCo had successfully restored power generation at the facility after working around the clock to contain the impact of the incident.

“And just yesterday I was in Akosombo here in the Eastern Region to inspect the damage at the Volta River Authority Electricity Generation Station following the devastating fire in the switchyard control room,” he said.

He acknowledged public concern over the disruption to electricity supply but delivered what he described as “good news” on the situation.

“I know many of you are concerned about the disruptions to the electricity supply caused by the Akosombo fire, but I want to share the good news that the GRIDCo and VRA engineers working together have been able to bypass the burnt-out control room and have restarted all the six turbines at the Akosombo Generating Station,” President Mahama stated.

“And so as of last night, the Akosombo Hydroelectric Dam is fully operational,” he added.

The President commended the engineers for their swift response and ingenuity in restoring the plant, describing their efforts as a testament to the capability of Ghanaian professionals.

“I wish to use this occasion to celebrate the engineers of GRIDCo and VRA for the hard work and ingenuity they put into restoring the hydro plant to full operation. These engineers are a living testament to the fact that Ghanaian workers are the nation’s most valuable asset,” he noted.

The restoration of all six turbines is expected to stabilise power supply nationwide after the fire incident triggered outages and raised concerns about the country’s energy security.

President Mahama’s announcement comes as part of a broader May Day address in which he highlighted government efforts to stabilise the economy and transition towards growth, job creation, and improved livelihoods under the “Resetting Ghana” agenda.

He reiterated government’s commitment to strengthening critical infrastructure and supporting the workforce, noting that the resilience shown by engineers at Akosombo reflects the broader potential of Ghana’s labour force.

The Akosombo Hydroelectric Plant remains a cornerstone of Ghana’s power generation, and its full restoration is seen as a major relief to households, businesses, and industry.
