BREAKING: High court frees Abu Trica on bail as extradition case drags on

The High Court has granted bail to Frederick Kumi, widely known as Abu Trica, in a major development in his ongoing extradition case.

The news was shared on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, by his lawyer, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, in a Facebook post confirming that the court approved bail after his client spent several months in detention.

This decision follows multiple unsuccessful efforts by the defence team to secure his release while contesting the legality of the extradition process.

Background of the case

Abu Trica, a Ghanaian businessman and social media figure, was arrested on December 11, 2025, during a joint operation involving Ghanaian security agencies and law enforcement officials from the United States.

He is accused of being part of an international cybercrime network allegedly involved in romance scams targeting elderly individuals in the US. Authorities claim the group defrauded victims of more than $8 million using fake online identities to build relationships and solicit money.

According to an earlier unsealed indictment, Abu Trica faces charges including conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering conspiracy. If convicted in a US court, these offences could carry a sentence of up to 20 years.

Investigators also allege that the group used artificial intelligence tools to create convincing fake profiles to deceive victims.

Extradition process and legal disputes

After his arrest, Abu Trica appeared before the Gbese District Court in Accra as part of extradition proceedings initiated following a request from US authorities.

Two other suspects initially linked to the case, Lord Eshun and Bernard Aidoo, were later cleared after prosecutors reportedly found no evidence against them.

The defence relied heavily on this development, arguing that the removal of the alleged co-conspirators weakened the basis of the conspiracy charges against Abu Trica.

His legal team subsequently filed several applications at the High Court, including judicial review and certiorari, seeking to overturn the District Court proceedings and stop the extradition.

Despite these legal moves, earlier bail applications were denied, keeping him in custody until now.

Public reaction and controversy

The case has drawn widespread attention in Ghana, partly due to Abu Trica’s prominent social media profile and his display of wealth prior to his arrest.

Debate has grown around allegations that his lifestyle was funded through cyber fraud, though his lawyers insist the prosecution must prove all claims in court.

The case has also sparked reactions from public figures and celebrities, with some advocating for his release and others calling for due process to take its course.

Impact of the bail decision

The High Court’s ruling to grant bail marks a significant turning point, allowing Abu Trica temporary release while the legal process continues.

Legal experts note that the extradition case is still ongoing, but the bail decision gives the defence more room to pursue its legal challenges outside of custody.

Conditions attached to the bail, such as reporting requirements and possible travel restrictions, are expected to influence how the case unfolds in the months ahead.
