Ghana Card Project Sets New Benchmark in Africa: 18 Million Registered, 17.8 Million Cards Printed
The Ghana Card project, a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation and Margins ID Group, has achieved remarkable success, registering nearly 18 million individuals and printing over 17.8 million cards.
Tremendous Progress
Moses K. Baiden, CEO of Margins ID Group, highlighted the project’s progress during a stakeholder engagement session. Despite initial challenges and significant investment (over $150 million in the first ten years), the project has made tremendous strides:
- 15.7 million registrations between 2019 and 2020, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic
- 85% of the population registered, with cards issued free of charge
- Registration capacity of up to 250,000 people per day, utilizing two-thirds of full potential
- Low error rate, with only 195,000 cards requiring corrections
Africa’s Most Successful National ID Project
Ghana’s national ID project stands out as the most successful in Africa, garnering international attention and acclaim. Seven other African countries have expressed interest in replicating the model.
Financial Sustainability and Operational Efficiency
The project’s financial sustainability and operational efficiency were discussed during the engagement session. The model allowed for free card issuance, unlike many other countries.
