Renowned Kenyan Law Professor, P.L.O Lumumba has downplayed concerns y the New Patriotic Party that there are foreigners on Ghana’s electoral register.
The NPP has written to Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and other international al bodies seeking its intervention to force the Electoral Commission to compile a new voter’s register.
President of the United States Barrack Obama and Germany’s Angela Merkel have all, according to the NPP been notified.
Speaking at the P.A.V Ansah Memorial lecture in Accra Friday, Prof Lumumba noted that tempering with the register will not affect the outcome of the elections.
He said “You are going for an election and I’ve heard your politicians quarrel about your register. It is not unique to Ghana, there are Togolese in your register in Kenya there are Tanzanians in our register and in Uganda there are Kenyans in the register that is common throughout Africa”.
Prof. Lumumba also commented on the recent spate of strikes by public sector workers.
Citing the recent industrial action by the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Prof. Lumumba noted it is an indication the public has become impatient with political leaders.
“I think there is a new consciousness – there is impatient and you can see among the technocrats. The doctors here were on strike, our teachers are threatening to strike in Kenya from next week, our nurses were on strike if you look at Zimbabwe their nurses are on strike.
“There is a movement in Africa it is a movement of impatience and those who do not see it are going to be shocked. If I was a political leader in Africa today, I will be very worried”, he added.
