Supreme Court stops voters registration exercise

The Electoral Commission of Ghana has been ordered by the Supreme Court to discontinue immediately all adverts in the media regarding the voters registration scheduled to start today.
The order is to hold pending the final determination of the case before it in which three persons have sued the Electoral Commission (EC) over the use of NHIS card as a form of identification in the exercise.
The order was made a few minutes ago when the case was called and one of the justices, His Lordship Mr Justice Jones Dotse said contrary to the pendency of the case before the court, he had seen an advert on TV3 yesterday in which the exercise was said to begin tomorrow.
He said “this culture of impunity must not be allowed to continue”.
Counsel for the Electoral Commission, Mr James Quarshie Idun after consulting with Mr Amadu Sulley, deputy chairman in charge of operations at the EC apologised and told the court that it was an oversight and that steps would be taken to address the anomaly.
The Chief Justice, Her Lordship Mrs Georgina Wood who presided over the court granted a short recess for the order to be carried out immediately.
