Police Rescue Kidnapped Victim After 5 Days Of Horrific Torture; 4 Arrested Including Two SHS Teachers
IGP's special intelligence operation busts kidnapping and extortion syndicate that demanded GH¢45,000 after filming torture
The Central North Regional Police Command has rescued 30-year-old Bismarck Amo after he was kidnapped, brutally tortured and held for ransom for five days at Breman UGC in the Ashanti Region.
Four suspects including two teachers of Kumasi Girls Senior High School are currently in police custody following a highly tactical, intelligence-led operation code-named “Operation Rescue the Victim and Arrest the Perpetrators.”
The operation, led by DCOP Abraham Acquaye and Regional Crime Officer Chief Supt. Agyemang Badu with support from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit, CID Headquarters and PID Ashanti Region, was directly coordinated by the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohonu.
How The Crime Happened
According to a police press release dated 14th September 2026 and signed by ASP Francis Onyina, Public Affairs Directorate, Central North Region, preliminary investigations revealed that on September 3, 2026, the victim allegedly defrauded suspect Mavis Badu Acheampong of an unspecified amount of money.
Upon realizing she had been defrauded, Mavis allegedly conspired with her husband — who is a senior military officer currently not in the country — and lured the victim from his place of abode at Assin Fosu to Kumasi via telephone.
With the help of Charles Doku, Oteng Baffour and others currently at large, she forcibly kidnapped Mr. Amo and held him hostage at her private residence from 6th to 11th September.
Torture And Extortion
Police say even after the family parted with GH¢19,500.00 as ransom, the suspects continued to hold and torture him.
To avoid police tracking, the syndicate used their own mobile phones to communicate with the traumatized family.
While in captivity, the victim was subjected to unimaginable torture. Police report that the suspects stripped him completely naked, tied his manhood with a strong nylon rope, and beat him mercilessly until blood oozed heavily from both his head and genitals.
They filmed the horrific acts and sent the videos to the victim’s family to demand GH¢45,000, claiming it was to cover the defrauded amount and search expenses. After extorting GH¢19,500 via mobile money transfers, they demanded an additional GH¢30,500 under threat of executing the victim.
The Rescue
The victim’s family reported the ordeal to the Regional CID in Assin Fosu on 8th September after paying the initial ransom but still not seeing their relative.
Police immediately activated tracking and rescue teams.
On September 11, realizing the police net was closing in, the suspects attempted to transfer the victim to a new undisclosed location and instructed a driver to dump him by the roadside. Tactical teams intercepted them mid-transit and rescued Mr. Amo.
At the time of rescue, police say he was partially unconscious, his whole body drenched in blood and covered in severe bruises from head to toe.
Current Status
Mr. Amo was rushed to a medical facility where he remains admitted under police escort, receiving urgent treatment for catastrophic physical trauma and severe psychological injuries.
The Suspects:
i. Mavis Badu Acheampong, 42, teacher at Kumasi Girls SHS and resident of Breman UGC.
ii. Charles Doku, 53, security guard and resident of Breman UGC.
iii. Oteng Baffour, 31, electrician and resident of Breman UGC.
iv. Kenneth Opoku Kwarteng alias Culture, age unconfirmed, also a teacher at Kumasi Girls SHS.
All four are in tight police custody and are being processed for court.
Police say a manhunt has been launched for the senior military officer involved and all remaining accomplices at large.
Police Assurance
“The Police Administration wishes to state unequivocally that taking the law into your own hands — no matter the provocation, grievance, or financial loss — is a severe crime that will be met with the heaviest response from the law,” the release stated.
The Police assured the public that under the watch of the current IGP, “lawbreakers can run, but they absolutely cannot hide.”
Police say they are releasing the photographs of the four arrested suspects to the media and will provide further updates as investigations unfold.
