GT Accra Regional Fire Service boss dismisses arson claims

The Greater Accra regional Commander of the Ghana Fire Service, DCFO Kwame Kwarteng has condemned the hasty conclusions drawn about the fire that destroyed about 400 shops at the Makola number 2 market.

Within a space of one month, some major markets in the Accra metropolis including Kantamanto, Makola number 1 and 2, Madina and the Konkomba markets have been destroyed by fire.

The causes of these infernos are yet to be established but several people including Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry, Nii Lantey Vanderpuye have attributed the situation to the handiwork of arsonists.

But the Greater Accra Regional Ghana Fire Service Commander, DCFO Kwame Kwarteng has disagreed with such unsubstantiated comments describing them as “pre-mature.”

In reference to the Makola number 2 market, DCFO Kwarteng said investigations were underway.

He pleaded with the victims to cooperate with the security agencies to get to the bottom of the matter.

According to him, the exact location where the fire started had been discovered and gave the assurance that its cause will be determined in about a week.

Meanwhile, Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Akwasi Opong-Fosu who visited the scene near the Agbogbloshie market commended the fire service personnel for their prompt response to the disaster.

He described the recent fire outbreaks in the country as totally unacceptable and therefore impressed upon the security agencies to fast track their investigations and make appropriate recommendations to government.
