Communications Director for the New Patriotic Party, Nana Akomea says the challenges of irregular supply of water and electricity in the country, have rendered many manufacturing companies to resort to “buying and selling”.
Nana Akomea said the situation has also compelled a number of firms to lay off workers in order to make savings to meet the extra cost they incur on alternative sources of power for daily operations adding, “we’ve become a nation of shop keepers”.
He observed that, almost every sector of the economy recorded a fall last year, despite the huge revenues government recorded from the oil proceeds.
“Gas shortage is no longer news, we see long queues at every station because there is no gas; why is it that every aspect of our national life is getting worse,” the former NPP Member of Parliament for Okaikoi South Constituency asked, while contributing to a discussion on the 2013 budget on Newsfile on Joy News TV and Joy FM, Saturday.
According to him, “it is unforgiveable” for the ruling national Democratic Congress to borrow as much $8 billion in the last Four years- the largest borrowing by any government in the country’s history- considering the resources available to the government.
He claimed majority of the deficit recorded in the 2012 budget, were incurred in the last three months of the year.
In another development, Information and Media Relations Minister Mahama Ayariga has assured, government was determined to ending the power crisis.
“President John Mahama will provide the leadership that will take the nation out of the energy crisis,” Mr. Ayariga said.
