Supreme Court grants NDC's joinder application

The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) joinder motion brought by the party seeking to join the election petition filed by the opposition New Patriotic Party.

The joinder motion was granted by 6-3 majority decision by the panel of judges.

The nine-member panel last week heard arguments from the lead counsel for the NDC, Mr Tsatsu Tsikata who said the NDC offered President John Mahama the platform to contest for the presidency and was thus an interested party whose interest would be injured if it was not allowed to join the petition as a respondent.

The NPP ‘s petition was filed by Nana Akufo-Addo (Presidential candidate of the NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia (running mate to Akufo-Addo) and NPP Chairman, Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey) challenging the results of the 2012 presidential elections.

The petition named the President Mahama, the Electoral Commission and the Chairman of the Commission as respondents.

According to the NDC it sought to join the named respondents because President Mahama was elected on its ticket.
