By no fault of the ordinary Ghanaians, we won’t allow the EC to disenfranchise them, that’s why we’re against Ghana Card – Hon Nicholas Amankwah

The Minority in Parliament has stated that it will not accept the Electoral Commission’s proposed Constitutional Instrument (CI) unless the National Identification Authority (NIA) tackles difficulties with the procurement of Ghana Cards (EC).

The EC aims to make the Ghana Card the sole identifying document for voter registration in the 2024 elections as part of the new CI.

The minority believes the EC’s proposal will disenfranchise many Ghanaians, and hence they oppose it.

Hon Nicholas Amankwah, MP for Amenfi East speaking on Kessben FM’s Maakye with Akuoko Kwarteng said that Ghanaians cannot be disenfranchised simply because the National Identity Authority failed to furnish them with their Ghana cards.

According to the National Identification Authority (NIA), more Ghana cards would be printed now that the government has cleared a GH100 million debt owing creditors.

Meanwhile, Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu maintains that the Minority lacks the ability to stop the government from conducting business in the house.

The printing of the cards was halted due to the NIA’s financial restrictions.

Following the initial payment of GH80 million, Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta revealed in a parliamentary hearing GH20 million has been added to make GHC100m.
