Pakistani woman stoned to death by relatives in front of court house

A Pakistani woman was stoned to death by her family in front of a court house in the capital Lahore, with neither the police nor passers-by intervening.

Farzana Parveen, who was three months pregnant, was pelted with bricks and beaten by relatives because she married against their wishes.

The “honour killing” – so named as it allegedly restores the honour of the family – has caused disgust across the country, with people taking to social media to decry the act.

Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif described the incident as “totally unacceptable” and has ordered the chief minister of Punjab province to take “immediate action” and submit a report by Thursday evening (May 29).

Her husband, Muhammad Iqbal, told the BBC that the police and passers-by simply stood by during the attack.
“They watched Farzana being killed and did nothing,” he said.
Hundreds of “honour killings” are carried out in Pakistan and India every year.
