The use of drones shows thinking outside the box – Inusah
The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Alhaji Inusah Fuseini has responded to critics who have condemned his idea of using drones to fight the surge in galamsey activities in country.
The inter-Ministerial task force on galamsey on Wednesday hinted it will resort to the use of drones to smoke out the illegal miners; an idea they said was conceived when the members of the taskforce attended a conference in Holland.
But the some sections of the public have criticized the idea saying; it is far-fetched and might fail.
Alhaji Fuseini however in an interview on Eyewitness News on Thursday said: “What is the farce about that? I mean we are thinking outside the box, we are looking to solve the problem so we must consider all the options.”
He admitted that some options the group is considering may or may not work but “the fact that you are considering those options doesn’t make it sacrilegious; it doesn’t. When Nkrumah [Dr. Kwame Nkrumah] was building the Akosombo dam, people said it won’t work…but he needed to explore those options.”
According to him, it is imperative for the group to be innovative in their thinking but clarified they have not made any firm decisions on the use of drones to tackle the galamsey menace.
He also explained that the drones being talked about “are little pieces of toys that can be charged by electricity and deployed with cameras to identify specific locations where mining is taking place illegally…they are not anything fussy to fly long distances and high up there and them IMANI, if they want to know more about drones, they can either visit Millennium Challenge Account and ask them whether they have never used drones in Ghana here.”
