The former Majority leader in Parliament, Cletus Avoka has explained that the President nominated a high number of Deputy Ministers because they are to oversee the Ministries when the Ministers attend to Parliamentary duties.
Sections of the public, Civil Society Organizations and some members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) criticized President Mahama for the large number of appointed Ministers and the Deputies he has appointed.
According to them, the large number of Deputy Minister Appointees is needless and will hugely affect the economy of the country.
Mr. Avoka nonetheless explained on Eyewitness News on Thursday that the large number is necessary to ensure effectiveness.
He stated that modern governance “involves a lot of commitment and focus” and since majority of the Ministers are from Parliament, “it is important that if many of them are coming from Parliament, then some of these Deputy Ministers are there to support the Ministers and to be able to take care of their absence of the Minister.”
He therefore urged the general public to concentrate on how to make the about 85 Ministers and Deputy Ministers efficient and accountable instead of complaining about the numbers.
“We should concentrate on their performance; we should concentrate on their efficiency and judicious use of our resources. If you want to talk about the numbers that they are too high, they are too few and the rest of them, you will never get the results.”
