It would be a breach of faith if EC goes ahead with Steering Committee – PNC
General Secretary of the Peoples National Convention (PNC), Atik Mohammed, says it would be a breach of faith should the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana allows the newly created National Election Steering Committee to operate.
He said it would be very difficult for him to believe that the EC having admitted its mistakes and apologized for setting up the Steering Committee and promised to go back to the drawing board will say the Committee is still functioning.
“The EC admitted its mistakes for not informing the Inter Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) before constituting the Steering Committee, the way they constituted the committee and the rationale behind it. They even apologized and told members that they will go back to the drawing board and come back with a repackaged Committee.
“They even told us if we could stop discussions on the Steering Committee while they go to the drawing board. So, we feel that it would be a breach of faith if the EC after telling us that they will go back to the drawing board allows the committee to go ahead to do what they said they should do without coming to the IPAC to discuss with us,” he noted.
Interacting with Fiifi Banson on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.3 FM, Monday, the PNC Chief Scribe downplayed the relevance of the Steering Committee as far as the November 7 general elections are concerned.
“At PNC, our stance is that that we needed to know the essence of the Committee so that we can discuss its relevance so that from there we can go ahead to discuss its composition among others”.
“We do not think that that the Committee will be relevant going into the general elections. Even if the responsibilities on the Commission are too much, the law will not give them that permission to delegate some of its responsibilities to the Steering Committee.”
