Ato Forson grants financial clearance for Samenya–New Town road, Ankobra Bridge works

Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Baah Forson has reportedly granted financial clearance for major construction works on the Samenya–New Town road in the Jomoro Municipality of the Western Region, as well as the rehabilitation of the Ankobra Bridge.

The clearance is a key step towards implementing the two infrastructure projects, which are expected to improve road connectivity, ease transportation challenges and stimulate economic activities across the municipality and neighbouring communities.

With the financial clearance process completed, the projects are expected to proceed to the next stages, subject to the necessary procurement, contractual and administrative requirements.

The 25-kilometre Samenya–New Town road, which runs from the Samenya Barrier through Half-Assini to New Town near the Côte d’Ivoire border, serves residents, motorists, traders and other road users.

However, the poor condition of the road has been a major concern for the Member of Parliament for Jomoro, Dorcas Affo-Toofey, traditional leaders, drivers and residents.

The proposed construction is expected to reduce transportation difficulties, improve access to essential services and facilitate the movement of people and goods within the municipality.

Meanwhile, the rehabilitation of the Ankobra Bridge is expected to address concerns about its deteriorating condition and improve safety and efficiency for commuters and commercial transport operators who rely on the route.

The projects are particularly important to communities whose livelihoods depend on farming, fishing, trading and other economic activities that require reliable transport infrastructure.

The financial clearance comes amid growing calls for urgent improvements to roads in the Jomoro Municipality. In July 2026, residents appealed for government intervention, citing the impact of poor roads on transportation, healthcare access and local economic activities.

The Ankobra Bridge has also been a source of concern, with residents calling for urgent rehabilitation in August 2026 and warning about the potential risks its condition poses to road users.

The latest development is expected to raise hopes among residents and stakeholders who have long advocated improved transport infrastructure in the area.

However, the specific amount approved, the official commencement date for construction and the timeline for the bridge rehabilitation had not been independently confirmed at the time of reporting.

The timely execution of the projects could significantly improve connectivity, support local businesses and advance infrastructure development in the Jomoro Municipality.
