Ghana’s economic recovery on track but caution needed to sustain gains – Ato Forson

Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson says Ghana has emerged from its economic crisis and established a foundation for sustained growth, but has warned that preserving macroeconomic stability will be critical to sustaining the recovery.

He said the country was on the right path, with recent progress creating the conditions for stronger economic performance.

“Today we have turned the tide. We are moving in the right direction. And I can assure you that based on the foundation that we have laid, this country is ready to take off,” Dr Forson said.

However, the Finance Minister cautioned against complacency, stressing that the country must proceed carefully to protect the gains made so far.

“And we will take off cautiously. Bear in mind that all the gains we have made are dependent on us maintaining macroeconomic stability,” he said.

Dr Forson urged the government to build on the progress achieved without undermining the economic foundations supporting the recovery.

“And so the gains that we will build on, we should not forget the foundation that we have laid,” he added.

He also reminded government officials and lawmakers of their responsibility to address the economic challenges that informed their election.

“We were elected to come and save a country in crisis. Don’t forget that. President Mahama and his members of parliament were elected to save this country because Ghana was in a crisis. Let us not forget that,” he said.

Dr Forson stressed that delivering on this mandate remained a collective responsibility, regardless of the improvements in the country’s economic outlook.

“Together, we have a responsibility. A responsibility to work to the satisfaction of the people of Ghana,” he said.
