Sefwi Wiawso MP Urges Ghanaians to Embrace Their Cultural Heritage

The Member of Parliament for Sefwi Wiawso, Kofi Afful Benteh, has called on Ghanaians to embrace their cultural heritage and take pride in their ethnic identities, irrespective of their backgrounds.

He stressed that ethnic identity is an essential part of an individual’s identity and should never be a source of shame or embarrassment.

According to the MP, Ghanaians should celebrate their origins, whether Sefwi, Ewe, Asante, Ga or any other ethnic group, noting that the country’s diverse cultures contribute to its rich heritage.

“Do not feel ashamed of where you come from because that is part of what makes you who you are as a Ghanaian,” he urged.

Mr Afful Benteh made the remarks at St. Joseph Senior High School in Datano, within the Sefwi Wiawso Municipality of the Western North Region, during a cultural and talent tour organised by musician Andrew Kwarteng, popularly known as Mandem Yopic.

The initiative aims to educate students on the importance of their cultural heritage while encouraging them to appreciate and preserve their traditions.

The MP urged Ghanaians to uphold and practise their cultural traditions, emphasising that greater cultural awareness would strengthen communities and help preserve their identities for future generations.

He also encouraged students to remain connected to their roots and appreciate the role of indigenous languages in defining and distinguishing different ethnic groups.

Meanwhile, the organiser of the tour, Mandem Yopic, said the initiative was designed to help students understand, appreciate and take pride in their cultural heritage.

He noted that understanding one’s roots was fundamental to personal identity, adding that indigenous languages played a vital role in preserving cultural values and traditions.

The musician encouraged students to learn, speak and promote their native languages with the same enthusiasm they demonstrated when speaking English.

He further urged them to take their education seriously, maintain discipline on campus and remain focused on their academic pursuits to secure a brighter future.

The cultural and talent tour forms part of broader efforts to promote cultural awareness among students, preserve indigenous languages and traditions, and encourage academic excellence.
