Queiroz admits conditions were not right as Ghana coaching stint ends

Carlos Queiroz has acknowledged that the “necessary conditions were not fully established” during his latest spell as head coach of Ghana’s Black Stars.
The Portuguese coach confirmed the end of his professional relationship with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) in an emotional farewell message following his departure after just seven matches in charge.
“This was not an easy decision, but both parties agreed that, under the present circumstances, ending our professional relationship was the most appropriate course of action, with the interests of Ghana, the Black Stars and Ghanaian football above everything else,” Queiroz said.
Queiroz’s record during the latest spell ended with one win, two draws and four defeats from seven matches. Ghana scored five goals and conceded 10 during the period.
His final match was the Black Stars’ 4-2 defeat to The Gambia in a 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Accra.
Queiroz returned to the Black Stars in September after initially leaving the position following Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
His first spell included a victory over Panama, draws against Wales and England, and defeats to Croatia and Colombia. He later returned for the 2027 AFCON qualifiers, suffering defeats to Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia.
In his farewell message, Queiroz thanked the GFA and its President, Kurt Okraku, for giving him the opportunity to lead the national team.
“It has been an honour to serve Ghana and the Black Stars. I sincerely thank the Ghana Football Association and particularly its President for their trust and for the opportunity to lead such a proud football nation,” he said.
Queiroz said he joined the Black Stars with the objective of building a stronger future for the team and supporting the development of Ghanaian talent.
However, he admitted that circumstances prevented him from fully achieving those objectives.
“I came to Ghana determined to help build a stronger future for the Black Stars and support the development of the country’s talent. Despite our commitment and efforts, the necessary conditions were not fully established, and our recent performance added to the decision to bring this journey to an end.
“I leave with respect, gratitude and pride,” he added.
The GFA is yet to announce who will replace Queiroz as head coach of the Black Stars.
