1 Million Coders certifications to be integrated into university degree, diploma programmes
The government is working with 11 leading universities in Ghana to integrate certifications from the 1 Million Coders Programme into selected degree and diploma programmes.
Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, disclosed this during the Government Accountability Series, where he outlined progress made by the ministry between January and August 2026.
According to Mr George, the Ministry has signed memoranda of understanding with 11 universities to incorporate the programme’s digital skills certifications into their existing academic programmes.
He said the initiative is intended to ensure that students can acquire industry-relevant digital skills alongside their conventional university education.
The participating institutions include the University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), University of Energy and Natural Resources, Ghana Communication Technology University and the University of Cape Coast, among others.
The Minister said the collaboration forms part of government’s broader effort to expand digital skills development and prepare Ghanaian students for opportunities in the technology-driven economy.
He noted that the 1 Million Coders Programme offers training in areas including cybersecurity, data analytics, artificial intelligence, project management and other digital skills.
As of August 2, 2026, Mr George said the programme had recorded 141,959 registered accounts, with nearly 30,000 admitted learners actively engaged in studies and almost 6,000 course completions.
He said more than 30,000 learners had accessed training through Coursera, while over 10,000 had participated through the Start to Code Alliance and nearly 2,000 through the NetAcad partnership.
Mr George said the government was also working with the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service to expand foundational digital skills training to senior high school students aged between 13 and 19.
He said integrating the certifications into university programmes would help broaden access to digital skills while ensuring that more young people graduate with competencies relevant to the modern labour market.
The Minister stressed that the government’s digital skills agenda was focused not only on increasing enrolment but also on ensuring that participants acquire practical competencies that can translate into employment, entrepreneurship and opportunities in the global digital economy.
He said the government would continue to deepen partnerships with educational institutions and technology providers as it works towards achieving the objectives of the 1 Million Coders Programme.
