Uber has announced its immediate withdrawal from Nigeria and Uganda, ending its ride-hailing services in the two African markets.
The company said the decision followed a review of its operations. Uber entered Nigeria in 2014 and Uganda in 2016.
In Nigeria, ride-hailing drivers have faced increasing fuel and operating costs, while disagreements over fares and platform commissions have sparked protests in recent years. Competition from Bolt, inDrive and local ride-hailing platforms has also intensified.
The challenges deepened after Nigeria removed its petrol subsidy in 2023, resulting in higher transportation and living costs.
Uber had expanded its operations in Nigeria beyond conventional car services, launching a boat service in Lagos in 2019 to help commuters navigate the city’s notorious traffic.
In Uganda, competing services such as Bolt, SafeBoda and Faras are expected to vie for Uber’s former customers.
The latest exits come after Uber withdrew from Ivory Coast and Tanzania over the past year. The company will now operate in only four African countries: Egypt, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa.
Uber said it would provide support to affected drivers and employees, with its help centre remaining available to users in Nigeria and Uganda until September 23.
The company stressed that the decision would not affect its broader African operations, adding that it continued to see opportunities for growth in sub-Saharan Africa.
