President Mahama warns airport workers against soliciting tips from visitors

President John Dramani Mahama has warned airport workers against soliciting tips or begging visitors, saying such conduct damages Ghana’s image and undermines efforts to project the country as a welcoming destination.
He said every worker and institution operating at the airport plays a role in shaping the experience of visitors to Ghana, from immigration officers and baggage handlers to transport operators and other service providers.
President Mahama made the remarks during the sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of the Multi-Tiered, Multi-Purpose Carpark and Airport Hotels Complex at the Accra International Airport.
According to him, Ghana’s geographical location gives the country a comparative advantage in aviation, but this must be supported by efficient regulation, strong safety standards, quality customer service, competitive aviation services and reliable ground transportation.
“Every institution and every worker at this airport contributes to Ghana’s image,” he said.
The President noted that the welcome visitors receive at immigration, the efficiency of baggage handling, the cleanliness of airport facilities, traffic management and the courtesy of service providers all contribute to their first and last impressions of the country.
He therefore called for a culture of professionalism, discipline and hospitality across the aviation value chain.
President Mahama commended the Ghana Airports Company Limited, the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority and other institutions operating at the airport for taking a firm stance against the practice of soliciting and begging visitors for tips.
“I’m happy that the Ghana Airport Company Limited and the Civil Aviation Authority and other institutions working at the airport are taking a tough stance against soliciting and begging visitors for tips. It reflects very badly on our country,” he said.
He further stressed the need for continuous investment in infrastructure, technology, safety, security and human capital to position Ghana’s aviation sector for sustained growth.
The President also urged closer collaboration among government, aviation authorities and other stakeholders to improve service delivery and enhance Ghana’s reputation as a major aviation and tourism destination.
