The Cost of Our Growing Dependence on Artificial Intelligence: Convenience Over Critical Thinking

In Ghana and across the world, the advent of artificial intelligence has bridged the gap in research and task execution. What once took days, weeks, months, or even years can now be done in a split second all because of AI. Students complete assignments, research papers, and projects faster. Workers automate tasks swiftly. Even in our newsrooms, editors and reporters rely on AI to transcribe audio and draft polished stories to be published online in seconds, saving time and stress.
But there is a silent cost we don’t see, even as the results roll in: the thinking that never happened. This pattern repeats daily in our lecture halls, newsrooms, and offices not just in Ghana, but worldwide and researchers are beginning to measure its impact.
The Cognitive Cost
Dependence on AI can lower individuals’ cognitive ability and, over time, build up mental fatigue.
A 2026 study of 580 Chinese students published in Acta Psychologica backs this up. The findings show that higher dependence on AI limits cognitive understanding and a person’s ability to think critically and solve problems.
Similarly, a 2026 paper titled “From Co-Design to Metacognitive Laziness: Evaluating Generative AI in Vocational Education” [arXiv preprint] found that students in vocational training increasingly seek fast answers rather than critically analyzing a task to understand it. This creates an environment where human creativity is dulled and analytical skills are slowed. The worst part: most people don’t notice the erosion happening.
The Newsroom Example
In journalism, AI use is growing fast. In a space where multitasking is the norm, reporters want to meet deadlines early. They write and send information directly to editors for scrutiny before a story breaks.
Muck Rack’s State of Journalism 2026 report highlights the rapid expansion of AI in newsrooms. Journalists now use AI to summarize interviews, generate attention-grabbing headlines, transcribe audio, and conduct background research. This has become “the regular” and “the new normal.”
The same is true for journalism students. While AI can produce deep reports, it raises red flags around transparency, accuracy, and the risk of publishing AI-generated content without verification.
This tension is not new to journalism, but it is sharper now. Most newsrooms draw a firm line: AI should assist the work, not write for the reporter, who remains responsible for the story. But as the saying goes, it is easier said than done. There are, and will be, instances where a generated prompt becomes the only outcome.
AI Is Not the Enemy of Thought
The research shows dependence on AI is not uniformly harmful. Its effect depends on context, type of task, and frequency of use.
For instance, a meta-analysis of ChatGPT’s educational impact shows mixed but moderately positive performance for students not a wholesale decline.
Used properly, AI can support research, surface information faster, and free up cognitive space for higher-order work like analysis and argument. Used carelessly, it replaces the very struggle that builds understanding in the first place.
This brings us to AI literacy not just knowing how AI works, but knowing when to trust it, when to question it, and when to set it aside completely.
The question is no longer whether to use AI. That decision has already been made in classrooms and workplaces. The real question now is: Are we learning to work deliberately with AI, or are we failing to notice when we’ve stopped thinking?
