Kumasi: 100 parcels of suspected narcotics seized at Asawase Market, two arrested
The Manhyia District Police Command has arrested two men after uncovering 100 compressed parcels of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic substances hidden inside fertiliser sacks at the Asawase Market in Kumasi.
The suspects, identified as Osman Bassein, 37, and Mohammed Abdul-Razak, 38, were arrested during an intelligence-led operation conducted on July 21, 2026. They are currently in police custody assisting with investigations.
According to a statement issued by the Ashanti Regional Police Command and signed by the Head of the Public Affairs Unit, Superintendent Godwin Ahianyo, the operation followed intelligence indicating that suspected narcotic drugs were being transported in fertiliser sacks.
Acting on the information, a team led by the Manhyia District Commander, with support from officers of the Manhyia Divisional Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the Zongo Police Station, proceeded to the Asawase Market, where the two suspects were apprehended.
Police said a search carried out in the presence of independent witnesses led to the discovery of 13 fertiliser sacks. Although the sacks appeared to contain second-hand clothing, a thorough inspection uncovered 100 compressed parcels of dried leaves believed to be narcotic substances concealed beneath the garments.
The recovered exhibits were photographed at the scene in accordance with evidential procedures before being secured for forensic analysis to determine the exact nature of the substances.
The suspects remain in custody while investigations continue and will be processed in accordance with the law upon the completion of inquiries.
