You can be jailed for rejecting coins – BoG warns
The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has warned that individuals and businesses who refuse to accept Ghana cedi coins as payment could face legal sanctions, including imprisonment.
The central bank reminded the public that all Ghana cedi notes and coins issued by the Bank of Ghana are legal tender and must be accepted for the settlement of transactions within the limits prescribed by law.
According to the BoG, rejecting coins without a lawful reason constitutes an offence under Ghana’s currency laws and may attract penalties, including fines or imprisonment.
The Bank urged traders, transport operators, shop owners, and the general public to comply with the law by accepting coins in everyday transactions. It stressed that coins remain a valid part of Ghana’s currency system and play an important role in facilitating commerce.
The BoG further encouraged the public to report persistent cases of refusal to accept coins to the appropriate authorities as part of efforts to promote confidence in the country’s currency.
