Dennis Miracles Aboagye speaks after being released by EOCO

Dennis Miracles Aboagye, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Communications Campaign Director for the 2024 Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia campaign, has dismissed reports suggesting he was questioned by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over an alleged GH¢55 million financial scandal.

Aboagye made the clarification after his release from EOCO custody, stating that at no point during his interrogation was the alleged GH¢55 million discussed.

EOCO arrested Aboagye as part of ongoing investigations into the alleged misappropriation of approximately GH¢55 million at the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation (IMCCoD) Secretariat. The investigation also involves the Secretariat’s former Accountant, Gerald Appiah, alongside other individuals.

According to an EOCO statement issued on July 13, the probe followed a petition from the current Executive Secretary of IMCCoD requesting further investigations into a forensic audit covering the period between August 1, 2022, and February 2, 2025. The anti-graft agency said its investigations, which began after an initial forensic audit last year, focus on suspected offences including misappropriation, diversion and theft of public funds amounting to about GH¢55 million.

EOCO further stated that Aboagye, Appiah and others are being investigated for alleged offences including conspiracy to steal, stealing, using public office for personal gain, causing financial loss to the state, dissipation of public funds, defrauding by false pretences, money laundering and related offences.

Reacting in a Facebook post, Aboagye firmly rejected claims that the alleged GH¢55 million formed part of his questioning.

“For the records: There was no discussion of any GH¢55 million with me by EOCO. None!!!” he wrote.

Describing his detention as an attempt to intimidate him, Aboagye said the experience had only strengthened his determination.

“If the intention was to break me, it has failed. If the intention was to scare me, it has failed spectacularly,” he stated.

He also expressed gratitude to NPP members and supporters for their solidarity, noting that he received reports of demonstrations held in his support while he was in custody.

“You did not just defend Dennis Miracles Aboagye; you defended the principle that no voice can be intimidated into silence,” he said.

Aboagye thanked his legal team, the leadership of the NPP and party supporters for standing by him throughout the ordeal.

He further reaffirmed his decision to contest for the position of NPP National Communications Director, insisting that the incident would not derail his political ambitions.

“Fuel has only been added to the fire,” he wrote.

He added that he remains committed to leading the party’s Communications Directorate, declaring: “I will lead the New Patriotic Party’s Communications Directorate to command the narrative, and no cell, no false story, no intimidation will change that.”

His comments come just days after his arrest, which followed shortly after he announced his intention to contest for the National Communications Director position. Prior to his detention, Aboagye had also spoken about the NPP’s preparations for the 2028 general election, predicting the party would unveil a campaign capable of “shocking” the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He concluded his statement with the party’s slogan, “Built to Lead. Ready to Win,” and the hashtag #CommandTheNarrative, encouraging supporters to remain united and move forward “stronger, louder, together.”

EOCO has not yet responded publicly to Aboagye’s latest remarks or provided additional details regarding the circumstances surrounding his detention.
