Opponents Reveal What It’s Really Like to Face Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappé

When Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal picks up the ball and runs directly at a defender, many opponents admit the same thought flashes through their minds: “Don’t end up in a TikTok edit.”
Villarreal midfielder Pape Gueye experienced exactly that during the final match of the 2024-25 LaLiga season. Rather than risking being embarrassed by the teenage sensation, Gueye chose a cautious approach.
“I stepped back I just wanted an easy end to the season,” the Senegal international joked after the match, explaining how he dealt with Yamal’s dribbling ability.
However, there is no room for that kind of caution at the FIFA World Cup. With every match carrying enormous importance, defenders cannot simply back away from elite attackers. Any hesitation could lead to a goal and potentially end their nation’s campaign.
Although Yamal has not reached his very best form this summer as he continues to recover from the hamstring injury that cut short his club season, the 19year old has still played a key role in helping Spain reach the World Cup semifinals.
Spain will now face France in a highly anticipated clash led by Kylian Mbappé, Yamal’s fierce rival at Real Madrid. Both players are regarded as two of the world’s most dangerous attacking talents and have already built impressive records on the international stage.
Yamal celebrated his 19th birthday on Monday, but despite his young age, he already boasts major international success. He helped Spain win the European Championship two years ago, defeating France in the semifinals before lifting the trophy.
Mbappé, now 27 and firmly in his prime, has established himself as one of the greatest World Cup performers of his generation. He scored four goals during France’s 2018 World Cup triumph, added eight more including a memorable hat trick in the 2022 final as France finished runners-up to Argentina, and has already found the net eight times at the 2026 tournament.
The two superstars have faced each other 10 times for club and country. Yamal has enjoyed greater team success, winning eight of those meetings, while Mbappé has claimed victory twice. Individually, though, the French forward has produced more direct goal contributions, recording nine goals and two assists compared to Yamal’s six goals and three assists.
Over the past season, ESPN has spoken with several LaLiga players and coaches to understand what it is like to compete against both stars, how their playing styles differ, and which of the two appears best positioned to win a first Ballon d’Or and eventually be recognized as the world’s best player.
