The Government Of The Commonwealth Of The Bahamas has agreed to renew work permits for Ghanaians working in the construction and engineering sector under private business initiatives, following diplomatic engagements between Accra and Nassau.

The announcement was made by Ghana’s Minister For Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who said the issue has been successfully resolved after constructive discussions with Bahamian authorities.

Resolution After Constructive Talks

In a statement, Hon. Ablakwa said the renewal of the permits will allow Ghanaian professionals in The Bahamas to continue their work without disruption.

“The Government of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas has agreed to renew work permits for Ghanaians in the construction and engineering sector who have been working under private business initiatives. We have successfully resolved the issue following constructive discussions,” he stated.

The affected Ghanaians were employed under private contracts in The Bahamas’ growing construction and infrastructure sector. Concerns had earlier been raised over the status of their permits, prompting the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to intervene.

Ablakwa Commends Bahamian Minister

The Foreign Minister expressed appreciation to The Honourable Darron S. Pickstock, MP, Minister Of State For Immigration in The Bahamas, for his role in resolving the matter.

“I thank the distinguished Minister of State for Immigration in The Bahamas, The Honourable Darron S. Pickstock, MP for his remarkable leadership,” Hon. Ablakwa said.

He added that the resolution reflects the strong bilateral relations between Ghana and The Bahamas and the commitment of both governments to protecting the welfare of their citizens abroad.

Support For Ghanaian Professionals Abroad

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it will continue to engage host countries to ensure Ghanaian professionals working overseas are treated fairly and in accordance with immigration laws.

The renewal is expected to bring relief to hundreds of Ghanaian engineers, technicians, masons, and other skilled workers contributing to major construction projects in The Bahamas.

Ghana and The Bahamas share long-standing diplomatic and cultural ties, with a growing number of Ghanaians engaged in skilled labour, education, and business in the Caribbean nation.
