Store operators protest KMA demolition, reject criminal allegations

Store operators affected by the recent demolition exercise under the Asafo Interchange have accused the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) of carrying out the operation without prior notice, despite their claims of possessing valid documents authorizing their businesses on the land.
Speaking after the demolition, one affected operator alleged that traders were not informed before the exercise, leaving many to suffer significant property losses.
“We have valid documents to operate on this land, yet we were given no prior notice before yesterday’s demolition. After destroying our property, they’re now accusing us of selling drugs and harbouring prostitutes. Ironically, some of the same leaders making these allegations are regular visitors here,” the operator claimed.
The affected traders have strongly denied the allegations of criminal activity, describing them as attempts to justify the demolition after the fact. They are calling on the authorities to provide evidence to support the claims and to explain why the demolition was conducted without prior engagement.
The KMA has not yet publicly responded to the specific allegations made by the affected traders. The demolition forms part of the Assembly’s ongoing efforts to enforce planning regulations and reclaim public spaces within the metropolis.
