Ghana Project Ranked Among Top 30 Most Impactful IOB Alumni Initiatives Globally

A Ghana-based project focused on transforming artisanal mining communities has been recognized internationally, placing among the Top 30 most impactful initiatives out of over 1,000 projects presented by IOB Alumni worldwide.

The recognition was announced in Belgium and celebrates the work of Andrews Kwame Perprem, Founder of Save the Mining Communities – Ghana.

According to the announcement, the project was selected for its contribution to education, child protection, and sustainable livelihoods in mining communities across Ghana.

“This recognition reflects the collective effort to transform artisanal mining communities through education, child protection, and sustainable livelihoods,” Mr. Perprem shared.

The IOB Alumni network brings together development professionals and change-makers trained at the Institute of Development Policy at the University of Antwerp, Belgium. With over 1,000 initiatives submitted globally, the Top 30 list highlights projects demonstrating measurable social impact and sustainable community development.

Save the Mining Communities – Ghana works directly with artisanal mining areas to address systemic challenges. Its programs focus on getting children out of hazardous mining work and into classrooms, supporting women and families with alternative livelihood options, and promoting environmentally responsible mining practices.

Mr. Perprem dedicated the recognition to the communities, partners, and volunteers who have supported the work over the years.

“To God be the glory,” he said, describing the Belgium recognition as both an honour and motivation to do more.

The milestone comes at a time when Ghana continues to grapple with the social and environmental effects of artisanal mining. Development actors say initiatives like this are critical to creating long-term alternatives for vulnerable populations while protecting children and the environment.

With the global recognition, Save the Mining Communities – Ghana hopes to expand partnerships and scale its model to reach more mining communities in need of education, protection, and economic opportunities.
