44 people arrested in Kumasi for selling ‘Wee Toffee’ and other narcotics to university students

The Ghana Police Service has arrested 44 people during a special intelligence-led operation aimed at dismantling an alleged drug trafficking network operating within the Kumasi Metropolis. The exercise also resulted in the seizure of suspected narcotics, tramadol, drug-infused confectioneries and illegal gambling machines.

The suspects, comprising 41 men and three women, were apprehended during a series of raids carried out from July 3 to July 5, 2026, by the Inspector-General of Police’s Special Operations Team in collaboration with the Ashanti Regional Police Command.

A statement issued by the Public Affairs Unit of the Ashanti Regional Police Command on July 7, 2026, said the operation focused on crime hotspots, including Emena New Site, Boadi, Abuabo, Ash Town, Kodie, Bremang, Pankrono and Gyinyaase.

During the operation, officers recovered 200 sachets of 225mg tramadol tablets branded as “Trama King”, additional quantities of 250mg tramadol, 400 sealed wraps of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic substances, and a sealed black polythene bag containing more dried leaves believed to be illicit drugs.

The police also confiscated cannabis-infused toffees reportedly being sold to students, a refrigerator stocked with suspected drug-laced local herbal mixtures, bottles of locally produced “Femude” juice believed to have been mixed with narcotic substances, Rizla rolling papers and nine casino jackpot machines allegedly used for illegal gambling.

According to the statement, all items retrieved during the operation have been secured for forensic analysis, while the suspects remain in police custody to assist with ongoing investigations.

Police said efforts are continuing to track down and arrest other individuals suspected to be linked to the alleged criminal network.
