More lives lost to floods than Helicopter crash, but less focus on prevention – Solomon Kofi Amankwah

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Director for the Odotobri Constituency, Solomon Amankwah, has called for greater national attention to the recurring flooding in Accra, arguing that the issue should be treated with the same urgency as other major national tragedies.
According to Mr. Amankwah, the recent floods, which reportedly claimed the lives of more than 30 people, have not received sufficient focus on long-term solutions despite their devastating impact. He expressed the view that both the government and traditional authorities should share responsibility for addressing the persistent flooding challenge.
Mr. Amankwah compared the public reaction to the floods with the attention given to the recent helicopter crash involving government officials, suggesting that while both incidents were tragic, discussions on practical measures to prevent future flooding have been comparatively limited.
He urged stakeholders, including policymakers, local authorities, chiefs, and residents, to work together to improve drainage systems, enforce planning regulations, and implement sustainable flood mitigation measures to protect lives and property.
