Police Arrest Nyinahin SHS Teacher Over Viral Video Assault on Female Student

39-year-old hostel caretaker Eric Buernortey Apaflo in custody after confrontation at school hostel

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested a teacher of Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School following the circulation of a viral video showing him assaulting a female student.

The suspect has been identified as 39-year-old Eric Buernortey Apaflo, who serves as caretaker of the school’s hostel. He was picked up by a Nyinahini District Police Patrol Team on Sunday, June 8, 2026 at about 7:00 p.m.

What Happened?

According to police, the incident involved an 18-year-old female student, Patience Chibu. Preliminary investigations indicate Apaflo confronted the student and some male students over alleged misconduct at the hostel. A misunderstanding during the confrontation led to the suspect assaulting the student.

The assault, which was captured on video and widely shared online, angered some students. Police say the students pelted stones at the suspect and invited youth from the town to the school hostel in an attempt to attack him.

Police Intervention

The situation was brought under control through the timely intervention of the police patrol team.

A Police Medical Report Form has been issued to Patience Chibu for medical examination and treatment. The suspect remains in police custody assisting with investigations.

Police Appeal for Calm
The Ashanti Regional Police Command has urged the public to remain calm and to use lawful and peaceful means in resolving grievances and disputes.

The statement was signed by Augustine Antwi, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Staff Officer/Ash, for the Head of Public Affairs Unit, Ashanti Region.

Context: Ghana Education Service and school authorities are yet to comment on disciplinary actions regarding the teacher. The viral video has sparked debate online about student discipline and use of force in schools.
