“This Bill Hinges on Our Values” – Social Scientist Urges Support for Anti-LGBTQ+ Law

Social Scientist Communicator, Dr. Christopher Ampadu, has called on Ghanaians to support the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill recently passed by Parliament, describing the legislation as a reflection of the country’s cultural identity and core values.
Speaking on the ongoing national debate surrounding the bill via a zoom interview on Kessben TV’s Digest show, Dr. Ampadu argued that the legislation goes beyond politics and speaks directly to the principles that define Ghanaian society.
“This bill is critical to Ghanaians because it hinges on our values and the very foundation we call ourselves Ghanaians and African,” he stated.
According to him, discussions about the bill should focus on the values and traditions of the country rather than claims that some provisions have been weakened or amended.
“The opposition is just talking about the bill being watered down and not the values of our society,” Dr. Ampadu said.
He stressed that Ghana remains a society built on strong cultural and ethical foundations that have been passed down through generations.
“We are a peculiar people with rich cultural and ethical values handed over by our forefathers,” he noted.
While acknowledging the importance of human rights laws, Dr. Ampadu argued that evolving social challenges require nations to develop responses that align with their unique cultural realities.
“Human right laws have been with us for a long time but as time evolves certain issues has to be critically dealt with,” he explained.
The social scientist further cautioned political leaders against losing sight of local values in the face of external influences.
“We are talking about our society, not the white man’s own. If we are not careful we would denigrate our virtues,” he warned.
He also expressed concern that some political actors have not been deliberate enough in defending what he described as Ghana’s core values.
“Many politicians are not mindful and intentional on our core values but their political propaganda,” he added.
Dr. Ampadu’s comments add to the growing public discourse surrounding the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, which continues to generate strong reactions from supporters and critics alike across the country.
