NPP’s Richard Ahiagbah Accuses NDC of “Scamming” Ghanaians Over Human Sexual Rights Bill

Mr. Richard Ahiagbah, Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government of reneging on its promise regarding the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, popularly known as the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill.
In a statement issued on [insert date], Mr. Ahiagbah said Ghanaians, including pastors, chiefs, and imams who campaigned for the Bill, were “scammed” by the NDC. He alleged that from 2021 to 2024, NDC leaders and MPs presented the Bill as a matter of Ghana’s culture and values, and that all NDC MPs voted unanimously for it in Parliament in February 2024.
According to him, the NDC’s strong stance contributed to the party winning the December 7, 2024 elections, because many voters saw the issue as cultural rather than political.
However, Mr. Ahiagbah claimed that President John Mahama and the current NDC administration have now passed a revised version of the Bill with “more than 30 amendments” that have removed tough penalties and weakened key protections. He described the changes as a “hollowing out” of the version that faith and traditional groups supported.
“This is painful. It makes me angry, and it should make you angry too, because President Mahama and the NDC have practically scammed us,” he wrote.
He argued that the NDC cannot describe the original Bill as “sacred” before the election and then amend it significantly after coming to power. He called it “manipulation” and “deceit.”
Mr. Ahiagbah urged Ghanaians not to accept what he called a “reduction of the promise to protect our values” and asked them to support the NPP and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for what he termed “principled and inclusive leadership.” He ended with the question: “If the NDC could not keep their word on something this sacred, what else will they not keep their word on?”
