Eid-ul-Adha: Mahama calls for religious tolerance and national cohesion

President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghanaians to continue promoting religious tolerance, peace and national unity as Muslims across the country celebrate Eid-ul-Adha.

Speaking at the national Eid-ul-Adha celebration held at the Black Star Square in Accra, President Mahama said the values of sacrifice, compassion and obedience associated with the festival should inspire citizens to live harmoniously and support one another regardless of religious or ethnic differences.

He noted that Eid-ul-Adha commemorates the obedience and faith of Prophet Ibrahim, who was prepared to sacrifice his son in fulfilment of Allah’s command before Allah replaced the sacrifice with a ram.

According to the President, the significance of the festival goes beyond the slaughtering of animals and should encourage people to reject hatred, greed, dishonesty and division.

“The occasion calls on us to be selfless, not to hate one another, not to divide among ourselves and not to be indifferent to each other’s suffering,” he stated.

President Mahama stressed that Ghana continues to stand out as a model of peaceful coexistence between people of different faiths and backgrounds, with Christians and Muslims living together peacefully for generations.

“We must continue to preserve and strengthen this harmony,” he said, urging Ghanaians to reject extremism, tribalism, political intolerance and all acts that threaten national unity.

The President also praised the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr. Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, for his lifelong commitment to peace, humility, tolerance and national development.
