It is unlawful to criminalize comments, they are civil cases – Lawyer Charles Juanah slams NDC Gov’t arrests

Lawyer for the National Cathedral project, Charles Owusu Juanah, has criticized the arrest of individuals over comments allegedly made against the government, describing the practice as unlawful and contrary to civil legal procedures.

Speaking on Kessben FM, Lawyer Juanah argued that comments made by citizens, even if considered defamatory or offensive, should not automatically lead to criminal prosecution. According to him, such matters are civil cases that must be handled through the appropriate civil procedures in court.

He stressed that criminalizing public comments undermines democratic freedoms and freedom of expression, adding that aggrieved parties should rather seek redress through civil litigation instead of arrests and detentions.

The remarks come amid growing public debate over freedom of speech and the treatment of critics under the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.
