Gov’t to Deploy 2,500 Transformers Nationwide to Improve Power Supply -Energy Minister
Story: Maurice Otoo

Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced that government is taking urgent steps to address the growing challenge of obsolete transformers across the country as part of efforts to strengthen Ghana’s electricity distribution network.
Speaking at the government accountability series, the Minister disclosed that many transformers nationwide have become outdated, affecting reliable power delivery in several communities.
According to him, government is tackling the issue head-on, with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) already deploying 200 transformers as part of immediate interventions.
Mr. Jinapor further revealed that plans are underway to deploy 2,500 transformers across Ghana to improve electricity supply and ensure greater stability in the national grid.
He noted that the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) is also preparing to commence works in Kumasi after the World Cup period, aimed at enhancing transmission infrastructure in the Ashanti Region and beyond.
The Minister stressed government’s determination to build a more resilient power supply system for all Ghanaians.
Touching on the recent fire incident at the Akosombo transmission plant, Mr. Jinapor said the country lost 1,000kVA as a result of the blaze.
He, however, assured the public that two out of the six affected transmission plants at Akosombo have already been restored.
Describing the damage as significant, the Minister explained that authorities cannot provide a specific timeline for full restoration but expressed confidence that engineers are working tirelessly to complete the remaining repairs as soon as possible.
This intervention, he insisted, forms part of broader efforts to modernize Ghana’s energy infrastructure and ensure consistent electricity delivery nationwide.
