Kojo Preko Dankwah Condemns Xenophobic Attacks on Ghanaians in South Africa

The host of the Kessben Maakye show, Kojo Preko Dankwah, has strongly condemned the recent xenophobic attacks targeting Ghanaians living in South Africa. He described these incidents as “barbaric” and a setback for African unity.

In response to viral videos circulating online, Dankwah emphasized that such violence against Africans seeking better lives in other African nations undermines the continent’s progress. He noted that previous xenophobic tensions in South Africa were directed at Nigerians. He warned that this harmful pattern now appears to be repeating itself with Ghanaians becoming the new targets.

According to him, Africa still has “a long way to go” in achieving meaningful integration. He argued that African leaders must take responsibility for creating conditions that discourage citizens from migrating due to economic pressures. He questioned whether political leaders are doing enough to address the hardships faced by ordinary citizens, as many Africans feel compelled to leave their home countries in search of better opportunities.

Dankwah also referenced past migration trends, including instances where Ghanaians queued in large numbers for Canadian visas. This occurred when Nana Asante Badiatuo, the then-executive secretary to President Akufo-Addo, asked the embassy to halt the visa process. He attributed this situation to economic difficulties at home, which compel citizens to seek opportunities abroad, and expressed concern that similar conditions persist across the continent.

Regarding the attacks, he criticized the perpetrators for resorting to violence instead of pursuing economic opportunities. He argued that blaming foreign nationals for job scarcity is misplaced.

He further cautioned African leaders against complacency, warning that growing frustration among the youth could lead to unrest if their concerns remain unaddressed.

In conclusion, Dankwah urged African governments to prioritize job creation, strengthen intra-African cooperation, and promote peaceful coexistence among citizens across the continent.
