Cinematographer Evander Kwame Agyeman justifies the need for filmmakers summit, urges quality and cultural focus
Renowned Ghanaian movie Director & Cinematographer , Evander Kwame Agyeman, has underscored the importance of filmmakers’ summits in advancing the growth of the local film industry.
The Veteran Cinematographer , who brings decades of experience in the entertainment sector, made these remarks while serving as a panel member at the Ashanti Filmmakers Summit held at Prempeh Assembly Hall on March 17, 2026. The event formed part of activities leading to the AshantiFest, organized under the leadership of Ashanti Regional Minister Hon. Dr Frank Amoakohene.
According to him, such summits have become essential platforms for filmmakers to showcase their work, build industry connections, and gain global exposure. He noted that they provide critical opportunities for networking, collaboration, learning, and distribution—key elements necessary for growth in the film industry.
He added that the summit also creates visibility for independent filmmakers whose productions may not reach mainstream audiences, while offering masterclasses, panel discussions, and workshops to help creatives sharpen their skills and stay aligned with evolving industry trends.
Speaking on digital film platforms, Mr. Evander Kwame Agyeman advised filmmakers and producers to prioritize content that reflects Ghanaian culture, stressing that international platforms such as DStv and other streaming services favor culturally rich stories. He cautioned against excessive nudity, smoking, and gangster-themed content.
The director further urged filmmakers to respect intellectual property laws by securing rights from music producers before using songs in their productions, warning that digital platforms strictly reject content that violates copyright regulations.
He also expressed concern over the growing trend of rushed productions, where some filmmakers complete multi-part movies within a few days. He emphasized that for films to be accepted on digital platforms, they must meet high production standards, urging industry players to focus on quality rather than speed.
To enhance success on digital platforms, he encouraged filmmakers to invest in strong storytelling, high-definition visuals, professional sound design, and effective marketing strategies, including social media promotion and partnerships with distribution platforms.
Mr. Evander Kwame Agyeman concluded that with the right approach, Ghanaian filmmakers can compete globally while preserving the country’s rich cultural identity.
