SIM cards to be blocked after 2 fraud offences after re-registration, Why can’t the blocking be done now? Wofa Kofi Appiah asks Sam George

The Minister for Communications, Sam George, has announced that following the ongoing SIM card re-registration exercise, any SIM card linked to fraudulent activity on two separate occasions will be permanently blocked.

According to the minister, the move is part of broader efforts to curb cybercrime, mobile fraud, and identity-related offenses in Ghana. Authorities believe stricter enforcement tied to verified SIM ownership will help improve national security and protect mobile users.

However, the announcement has sparked public debate. Media personality Wofa Kofi Appiah, speaking on his show, questioned the timing of the policy. He asked why such measures could not be implemented immediately, rather than waiting until after the re-registration process is completed.

His comments reflect growing public curiosity about the effectiveness of existing systems and whether enforcement challenges, not policy gaps, are the real issue.

The SIM card re-registration exercise, which links users’ identities to their mobile numbers, is expected to provide authorities with a more reliable database to track and act against offenders. Government officials insist that once the process is finalized, enforcement of rules like the “two-strike” fraud policy will be more precise and legally robust.
