Mahama to break ground on first farmer service center at Afram Plains

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to break ground on the first Farmer Service Center at Afram Plains this Friday 20th March 2026 , marking the start of a nationwide initiative to support farmers with mechanization, training, and extension services.
Speaking at the opening of the Ghana Agrotech Fair 2026, President Mahama said the centers are part of government’s broader agenda to modernize agriculture and strengthen value chains.
“Government intends to build 50 Farmer Service Centers nationwide in the main agricultural producing areas. The first phase will cover 11 centers, and I will be breaking ground for the first one this Friday at Afram Plains,” he stated.
He emphasized that the centers will provide critical support to farmers, including access to tractors, ploughing and harrowing services, transportation of fertilizers, shellers for processing grains, and practical training.
“Farmers will also receive guidance from extension officers who will advise them on best practices to improve production,” President Mahama added.
The President noted that the initiative is aimed at increasing productivity, reducing post-harvest losses, and integrating farmers into modern agricultural value chains.
“The future of agriculture must be technology-driven, responsive to climate realities, and focused on improving yields and incomes. These centers are designed to support our farmers to achieve that,” he said.
President Mahama urged all stakeholders—farmers, entrepreneurs, investors, and researchers—to work together to ensure the success of the program.
“With these Farmer Service Centers, we are not only supporting our farmers, but also strengthening Ghana’s industrial base, creating jobs, and positioning our agricultural sector for competitiveness and growth,” he noted.
The Afram Plains center will serve as a model for the remaining centers, connecting farmers to machinery, training, and services that will enhance agricultural productivity and contribute to national food security and export growth.
