Weweso cluster of schools in danger

The need for a footbridge at Weweso Cluster of Schools in the Oforikrom Municipality of Kumasi is well overdue.

Entering or exiting Kumasi on the main Accra-Kumasi highway one may be tempted to think all is safe and well. A visit to Weweso Cluster of Schools just at the edge of KNUST reveals a different story all together. Not a day go by without recording a vehicular accident on that stretch of road. The danger posed to school children and teachers cannot be over emphasised.

Apart from the danger from the heavy vehicular traffic on the highway, miscreants take advantage of the provided narrow underpass to molest vulnerable school children and teachers in broad daylight. Noting that the main Tech District Police Station is less than a 600 meters away from the school raises issues of concern.

The Oforikrom Municipal Assembly owes an obligation to the school, the teachers, the pupils and citizenry at large to ensure safety and security on that stretch.

Weweso Cluster of Schools has produced a lot of scholars in the region and deserve a better treat. Lives cannot be lost or traumatised because of the location of the highway closer to the school. Note that Weweso schools existed in the area before the highway was constructed.

The Minister for Highways, The Ashanti Regional Minister, The Minister for Education and the IGP need to prioritise the safety of the children and teachers as a matter of national concern.
