If CocoBod says there are challenges and has reduced the cocoa price, the top management of CocoBod should also reduce their outrageous salaries – Hon. Andrews Bediako

Speaking on Kessben FM with Wofa Kofi Appiah, Hon. Andrews Bediako, the former Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Jaman South, delivered a strong message to the leadership of Ghana Cocoa Board (Cocobod) regarding the ongoing concerns in Ghana’s cocoa sector.

According to Hon. Bediako, if Cocobod cites financial and operational challenges as justification for reducing cocoa producer prices, then fairness demands that the institution’s top management should also make sacrifices,  including cutting what he described as their “outrageous salaries.”

He argued that cocoa farmers, who form the backbone of Ghana’s cocoa industry, should not be the only ones bearing the burden during difficult times. “If there are genuine challenges affecting the sector and prices must be reduced, then leadership must lead by example,” he emphasized during the discussion.

Hon. Bediako’s comments come amid growing concerns among farmers about fluctuations in cocoa prices and the rising cost of farm inputs. Many stakeholders believe that any reduction in producer prices directly affects livelihoods in cocoa-growing communities.

The former MCE stressed that accountability and shared sacrifice are critical in public institutions, especially those that directly impact rural economies. He noted that transparent leadership and cost-cutting measures at the top would help restore confidence among farmers and the general public.
