Treat Cocoa Sector Crisis as National Emergency — Moses Gyan Urges Government

The Administrator of the Ghana Cooperative Cocoa Farmers Association, Mr. Moses Gyan, has called on the government to treat the ongoing challenges in Ghana’s cocoa sector as a national emergency requiring urgent intervention.

Speaking in an interview with Kojo Preko Dankwah on Kessben FM’s flagship morning programme, Kessben Maakye, Mr. Gyan stressed that cocoa remains one of Ghana’s most valuable natural resources and deserves the same strategic attention given to the gold sector.

According to him, the government appears to have shifted significant focus toward gold production, overlooking the long-term economic importance of cocoa. He noted that while gold is an extractive resource that could eventually be depleted, cocoa remains renewable and continues to support millions of livelihoods across the country.

“This is not the first time the price of cocoa has dropped, and it is high time the government develops a comprehensive strategy, just as it has done for gold, that will solve this problem once and for all,” he stated.

Mr. Gyan further appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to address the cocoa sector crisis with the same urgency accorded to national emergencies, highlighting its widespread impact on the entire value chain.

He explained that the crisis affects not only cocoa farmers but also transport operators, government revenue streams, and the broader Ghanaian economy.

Mr. Gyan warned that failure to take decisive action could threaten the sustainability of the cocoa industry, which has historically been a backbone of Ghana’s economy and a major foreign exchange earner.
